Tooele County, an area west of Salt Lake County, Utah is connected to Salt Lake City by Interstate 80 (I-80). As the population in Tooele County grows, increasing the number of people that commute between the two counties, there is a need to add capacity to I-80. When there is severe congestion or a severe crash, motorists have only two options: wait for things to clear or make a two-hour detour to the south. Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) contracted with Arizona-based Sundt Construction on a USD 4.7 million project to widen the two-mile stretch of I-80, adding an extra lane between state road 201 (SR-201) and exit 99 while also providing the necessary roadway striping and signage. With the goal of enabling multidiscipline teams to share information and review design files, the I-80 project was one of UDOT’s first projects using Digital Twins and design review technology.
