Summary

With the knowledge that there is an advanced state of deterioration on most of the U.S. bridge infrastructure, we will look at some of the underlying causes for the condition of the concrete construction and investigate various systems available for the restoration and long-term protection of the structure.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) conducts an annual survey of the nation’s bridges to assess their overall condition. The most recent assessment concludes that 49% are considered to be in a “fair” condition and in need of restoration, and a further 7% are deemed to be in “poor” condition and require full replacement. This survey supports the allocation of funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act which set aside nearly $30 billion over 5 years (2022 – 2026).

In this presentation we will:

  • Identify environmental and service related causes of concrete deterioration and the resultant effect on the structure.
  • Understand the need for detailed preparation of the deficient surface areas.
  • Identify performance characteristics of repair materials that make them suited to a particular application.
  • Identify specific performance measures of concrete coating systems and understand how these can counteract the environmental effects of concrete deterioration.
