Summary
Thousands are killed and millions are injured each year in vehicle crashes—many of which are caused by driver error and could be prevented with readily available technologies. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving Systems (ADS) provide a way to effectively and economically prevent many of these crashes.
This presentation will provide information on why and how this life saving technology can be implemented:
- "D drivers," the FHWA Safe System approach, and how ADAS could improve the safety and efficiency of our roads in the immediate future.
- ADAS and ADS standards and how they need to be revised to address both human and robot drivers.
- How we need to reframe our nation’s mindset and approach to reducing vehicle crashes and fatalities.
This presentation coincides with the recently published SAE EDGETM Research Report authored by the presenter, entitled: Reducing Human Error and Setting Realistic Expectations with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Attendees will be given information on where they can obtain this report.

Seth W. Chalmers, PE, is a bold, enthusiastic voice for safety and traffic. He currently is the Director of Traffic Engineering at Dibble's Phoenix, Arizona office, and has 40 years of diverse transportation and traffic engineering experience. Throughout his extensive career, Seth has served in pivotal roles for progressing traffic engineering practices and policies in all aspects of traffic engineering studies and design, with a particular emphasis on safety. He is an active member of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) and currently serves as the Chairperson of the Traffic Signal Committee. Additionally, Seth is a respected Friend of the Pavement Marking Committee and the High Friction Surface Treatment Council. Beyond his involvement with ATSSA, Seth is also a proud member of several distinguished organizations, including the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), ASTM International, and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Seth is also an Eagle Scout.
