The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) is trying to give two historic bridges a new lease on life by making them available for relocation or sponsorship.
The bridges, located in Wright and Winneshiek counties, have been made obsolete by newer replacements.
Their old age has earned them spots on the National Register of Historic Places.
Boone River Bridge located in Wright County was built in 1912 previous to the Iowa Highway Commission set standards for bridge design in the state. It is one of the few remaining bridges of its style.
The Fort Atkinson Bridge has stood over the Turkey River since 1892 after the county’s Board of Supervisors hired private contractors for its design and construction. The bridge’s decorative elements make it stand out despite it being one of many in this shape.
Prospective bridge adopters may receive access to government funds if they submit a plan for relocation or adoption.
IDOT encourages research into the grants and their specific requirements before applying.
