No. 9 - Hastings Bridge Design-Build

Dec. 15, 2014

There are times when something special is needed to do

all the heavy lifting. The 3,300-ton structure was lifted

55 ft into place using 900-ton strand jacks mounted to

the top of the piers. To date, this marks the heaviest bridge

move in the U.S. The unique 545-ft-long free-standing

tied-arch main span includes trapezoidal variable depth

steel box arch ribs, post-tensioned concrete tie girders and

a redundant grid steel fl oor system. Project challenges

included working in a narrow section of the Mississippi

River and dealing with winter freeze-up, spring fl oods and

navigation traffi c.
