After finishing the concrete grind and joint repair of Maple Street Bridge late last week, construction to the structure was officially completed within the projected 10-week timeframe.
Construction began August 27th, and to complete work on time portions of the project’s work were done during overnight hours and when possible, one lane of traffic was opened for access outside of working hours to provide access to the heavily traveled bridge.
“The Maple St. Bridge experiences some of our highest traffic levels in the City, and we knew this was going to be a pain point for drivers,” says public works Director Marlene Feist in a statement. “We are thrilled to have been able to replace the surface and also make critical joint repairs to give the bridge decades of life and safe travel.”
The $4.7 million project involved grinding and removing approximately three-quarters of an inch of the deck surface and replacing it with polyester concrete. The specialized product has a high level of bonding ability with the concrete deck foundation and increases structural capacity.
In addition to a new surface, engineers identified joints that needed to be repaired and reinforced. This additional work was able to be done within the window of the project timeline and will reduce future closures for needed repairs and maintenance.
