Most areas of the state are hard-hit every winter season; the DOT is looking to bolster its maintenance staff and capabilities

The topic of winter maintenance is a hair's breadth from being perhaps the apex topic for transportation agencies, notably in the Midwest. In an effort to be ready for whatever Mother Nature hurls at them this winter, the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced it intends on hiring 600 highway maintenance workers for the upcoming winter.

Eastern Iowa locations including Anamosa, Burlington, Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Davenport, Dyersville, Independence, Marion, Mount Pleasant, Oskaloosa, Ottumwa, Sigourney, Tipton, Washington, Waterloo, Waverly and Williamsburg will be the focal points.

IDOT's website has an extensive series of information on how to handle winter driving and what to expect from differing road conditions, as well as a blog that takes visitors inside a day in the life of a plow operator.
