Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn are set to announce approximately $23 million in infrastructure funding for South Carolina today, June 28. This comes as part of the Biden Administration's investment in infrastructure across the nation.

The funding will go to a pedestrian bridge and a transit hub in Orangeburg in order to better connect neighborhoods and college campuses, according to The White House.

“This is a project that is connecting residential neighborhoods and HBCU campuses to downtown businesses,” Buttigieg told reporters. “We believe it will lead to new business and industry, as well as tourism, flourishing in the area.”

Other grants being announced today are $21.5 million to eliminate a rail crossing in Chula Vista, California, $24.7 million to replace nine bridges in Iowa, and $25 million to construct a new bridge in North Bergen, New Jersey.

Also being announced is the Biden Administration awarding over $2.2 billion from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program to 162 different infrastructure projects in the U.S. The RAISE program's fiscal year 2023 funding is split between rural and urban areas.

“We don’t design the projects at headquarters. We are proceeding very much on the idea that the answers don’t come from Washington but more the funding should,” Buttigieg said. He noted that 70% of the projects the administration is funding are located in low-income and underserved communities.
